One important fact that many people don’t realize, even some who are deeply involved in online marketing, is that WordPress isn’t very SEO-friendly right out of the box. Regardless of what you niche is, there is a huge amount of competition out there these days. Effectively positioning your site for maximum exposure is essential.

Some folks think that just buying a domain, installing WordPress, and adding high quality, relevant content is enough. While that’s a good start, it’s really just the beginning.

Fortunately, WordPress gives users a great platform on which to optimize assuming, of course, they know the “tricks of the trade.”

Just put the following five strategies into effect and you’ll be shocked by how quickly your traffic begins to grow.

  1. Title Tags. Avoid inserting your site name into the title of each and every blog post or page of content.  WordPress does this by default, unfortunately, and it can seriously hurt your search engine rankings. You only need to rank for you site name once, so including it over and over throughout your site doesn’t help anything. This plugin makes modifying your page naming scheme quick and easy. This is one of the simplest things you can do to boost SEO, but also one of the most important.
  2. Meta Tags. First of all, don’t worry much about meta keywords. These used to be a big deal but, due to recent changes in Google’s search and indexing algorithms, they no longer have any real affect. A good, hand-written (not programmatically-generated) meta description is still very worthwhile, though. The Headspace plugin is a great tool for automating this process.
  3. Permalinks. Give each page on your WordPress site a clear, descriptive filename. Google and the other search engines use this information when indexing links. For example, avoid names like “a112.htm” in favor of something friendlier like “seo-tricks.htm.” WordPress defaults to the former, non-SEO friendly style, so you’ll have to be sure to change it when building your site. To quickly change your default permalink format, go to Settings >> Permalinks and put “/%postname%/” (without parentheses) in the “Custom Structure” field. This will automatically match the filename of each new post with its title.

Don’t forget, it’s important to be patient when it comes to search engine optimization. There’s nothing that’s going to take a page from zero to the top of the search results overnight. Looking at the big picture is key. Small improvements can yield big increases in traffic, you just have to give the process time to work.
