In my opinion every single business that has an online presence should be actively undertaking content marketing. Let me start by sharing with you my own definition of what content marketing is.

The purpose of content is to tell a story that attracts and engages your audience, the purpose of marketing is to get your audience to do something and only when these comes together, is this content marketing … Steve Cartwright

Content marketing is the best way to attract, inform, educate and engage your target audience while building your influence (authority) in the eyes of your audience. Sounds simple doesn’t it, if only it was that easy so let’s discuss some of the most common content marketing mistakes that I come across that you’ll definitely want to avoid.

Avoiding SEO

Search engine optimization involves both on- and off-page actions that you can take to ensure that search engines find your website, blog or products. SEO uses certain techniques and tactics to help your audience find you online. Blogging regularly with properly optimized content is one of the main advantages to content marketing and with a multitude of plugins to help you to optimize your content, SEO has never been easier.

Not Using Automation Wisely

Automation can and often is misused, it should only be used to help make everything possible. You’re only one person so can only do so much, as a good rule of thumb, you should personally respond and interact with people on social media and within the comments section of your blog, but you should use automation for everything else.

Not Promoting Your Content

When you create any type of content that you want people to find, you should promote it via your social media networks and email newsletter. I love to use Twitter for this as it can be more or less fully automated, couple this with LinkedIn and Facebook and it is possible to promote your content for very little. You can however promote it using pay-per-click advertisements. However always remember if you don’t promote your content, you’ll get a lot less positive results from it as you will fail to reach your audience in the multiple places they go online.

Forgetting to Optimize Your Headlines

Part of search engine optimization involves headlines, but it is so important it deserves a special mention. There are some ways to ensure your headlines are optimized. First, put the keywords in the first three words; secondly, test out more than one headline to see what generates the best results.

Creating Poor Quality Content

Your audience doesn’t want a ton of content under any circumstances. If you cannot create good quality content on a daily basis, don’t try and do it. Create quality content on a schedule that works for you and that you can stick to. If it’s high quality, answers questions, and solves problems of your audience, it will be welcomed by your audience.

Not Publishing Enough

This may be contradictory to the previous point, but you do have to publish enough content to get noticed and keep and maintain the interest of your target audience. Don’t get so bogged down in perfection as many people do, that you neglect creating new content at least weekly.

Concerning Yourself with Quantity over Quality

By the same token, you don’t want to post daily if the content doesn’t somehow add value to your audience. Just posting something, especially if it doesn’t match your niche, won’t get the results you want and could potentially turn your audience away.

If you can avoid these comment content marketing mistakes, you’ll have a lot more success with your content marketing efforts and should you have any questions please feel free to ask them, in the comments section below.

About Me

I've been designing and marketing websites and businesses for over 24 years and prior to this I worked in sales, marketing and big business for almost 18 years... which makes me not only old, but also highly experienced at this marketing and Internet stuff.  I've won lots of awards and helped thousands of people, and this website is a testament to the information I share freely to help others succeed online.

When I'm not designing websites, doing this online marketing stuff or writing. I love nothing more than getting out on a weekend and scuba diving. I'm a qualified rescue diver and love getting wet in the waters around Perth and Rottenest Island. I also cycle, which must be a sight as I'm not the thinnest of people (lol)... and a paddle on a kayak or a swim helps makes most weeks, perfect. At home I have a marine reef tank, which I just love and on top of that I've an awesome dog, called Ziggy.
