With Google at least there are two types of search results generated; the middle of the page contains the organic or free listings while the right hand side and sometimes the top above the free listings contains the sponsored links (Pay Per Click). With good search engine optimization your website is listed on the first page of the results generated, in the middle of page in the free listings.

Search engine optimization is the process of taking an existing website and fine tuning it so that the search engines show your website above that of your competitors within the search results for a chosen keyword phrase.

This results in more people visiting your website and in turn more sales of your products or services.
